Nadia Comaneci - (born on 12 November 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej / Now Onesti, Romania), Romanian gymnast. The first person in history to score a 10 for competing in the Olympics. Bela Karalyi came across Comaneci when she was six. Later, she would be Romania's gymnastics coach. The first time she competed at the national junior championships in 1969, finishing 13th. She won the competition in 1970. At her first international event in 1972, a pre-Olympic junior competition for communist-bloc nations she was awarded three gold medals. Then in 1973 and 1974 she was overall junior champion. When she competed for the first time in senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva from Russia took home five gold medals as well with one silver. She was the winner of the American Cup in New York City in 1976 and became the first woman to perform the backward double salto in a dismount from the uneven bars parallel to each other.
